In the dark dank depths of Chinatown there's a detective who fights for good, or at least less bad stuff than the bad guys, and he's getting close to a secret that could make him a lot of enemies. Why does he continue his almost noble crusade, for a dame, (a dame is apparently a woman in crime stuff). The beautiful and secretive Mrs. Malwray is a bundle of mystery in herself as she confuses the detective J.J. Gittes with her strange actions, first sueing him for being hired by a woman posing as her to spy on her husband, then stopping the lawsuit, then hiring him after her husband died, showing up everywhere and hiding things from him, sleeping with him, lying to him, sleeping with him, and just doing suspicious stuff. Mrs. Malwray seems like a suspect until you find out about the horrible twist in the plot that makes her a sympathetic character. As much as I hate to admit it I saw the twist coming, the movie had sort of a Color Purple vibe so I kind of guessed, it doesn't make it any less disturbing.
